I want to use a cloth material I found in a material store. Can I just use and install that like I would with the normal headliner material or will it look bad?

It depends on the type of material you use. Headliner material has a layer of foam on the backside (usually 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick) and that helps to give you a smooth, full look once it is installed. It also helps with insulating qualities and keeping the glue from bleeding through to the material.

A thinner material or one without the foam on it may show the little creases and dimples of the headliner board, which may not sound like a big problem, but it can degrade the end job quite a bit. Or in other words, it just may not look good to you, but if you can live with that, you can use about any type of material. There is a reason that headliner material is made for headliners in cars.
